Choosing a Dating Site

Choosing the right online dating site can make all the difference in whether you actually find someone you will be happy with. Because of the large number of sites, it may seem difficult to know which is the best for you, and many people just sign on with the biggest players assuming that will give them the best shot at finding a good match.

But the secret to choosing the right site is to do some preparatory investigations. When a company wants to sell something the first step is to do some market research. The same principle holds good for dating sites. You are trying to sell yourself as an attractive date, so choosing the right dating market place is paramount.

Perhaps the first thing to do is be clear about your goals. Do you want to find a soul-mate? Or would you rather play the field? Are you after a serious long term relationship, or looking for casual fun? Once you know what you want, this will give you some criteria for choosing a site.

But there are other considerations. For instance just because a site has a lot of members doesn't mean they will have what you are looking for. If you're 25 living in Scunthorpe and most of the members are over 40 and live in London, you won't have much success! And if there are 20 likely prospects in your area, but 80 members of the same sex competing with you, you also reduce your chances! Also, if most of the prospects are after long term and you want casual fun, you are in for disappointment.

So once you know what you want and have your type of market place in mind, you are ready to investigate individual sites. Most sites will let you sign up for free. You can then do a search for your area and age group. At this stage you are more interested in the number and quality of the potential matches, keeping in mind your goals. Then take a moment to check out the competition! This can make a big difference; it can be much better to be a big fish in a small pond!

Don't be disparaging of the free dating and personals ad sites. There are sites that are completely free, and these may have better prospects for you than the bigger subscription based sites.

By doing your homework in this way, you can identify the best places to concentrate your efforts. A good rule of thumb is to pick one or two subscription based sites and a few of the free sites. But spending time investigating can save you many wasted meetings, rejections and lonely evenings!

Obviously the UK Dating Site Directory is a great launching point for your investigations because there are so many great UK sites for you to check out! Good Luck!
