The only drawback is that you need separate prgrams and need to learn about how they work,
and manually keep them up to date. All-in-one solutions also available at a low cost.
Avast Anti-virus has a free
offering. It is the one I use on my own home computer. Anti Spyware/Malware
Software

AdAware by Lavasoft is my
recommended Anti-Spyware program. Ad-Aware Free Anti-Malware
features
real-time protection, a rootkit removal system, e-mail scanning, automatic
updates, and much more — to ensure that you have the power to protect
yourself online.
Again, I use this on my own home computer.
Firewall Software
Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 all have a built in firewall that is quite sufficient.
However if you would like a more customisable solution, I recommend Zone Alarm's free firewall.
If you would like a
combination anti-virus/anti-spyware solution,
check out the offering
from Lavasoft. At only £18.95 it is the best deal I have found.
Should you wish to
combine anti-virus, anti-spyware and a firewall AND protect
up to 3 computers, you
just cannot beat the Avast Internet Security Suite.
